Strength

Aloha Sprinklerinos,

I've really been enjoying the last two weeks of blogging every day and being a bit more focused on the things that mean the very most to me in life.

Quite obviously, the thing that tops that life list is Baby Glitter. 

"I love you not only for what you are but for who I am when I'm with you".

I often talk about how much I love her (like HERE in my Darcy Day Date or HERE in my Change post) and which amazing things she's done to make me grit my teeth with joy and adoration but I rarely touch on me in those scenarios. 

It's true that Motherhood changes your life. You loose touch with people, you function on less sleep, you adapt to a safety proofed house and learn to navigate a stair gate in the dark. You find yourself spilling over with love at the smallest things which to anyone else would be trivial (I nearly cried the other day when Darcy put her own wellies on) and you marvel at the tiniest of things.

But it is also true that it will change you as an individual. I feel, and please don't think me arrogant, that it has changed me for the better. I feel as though I have a new found strength and confidence and not only can I carry a baby, a buggy and my car keys all in one hand, but I can see the wood for the trees that little bit more. The insignificant worries are less of an issue and I feel a deep sense of determination to achieve my goals and dreams. After all, I'm not just achieving them for me now, I am achieving them so that when Darcy is older she can talk about me with pride. 

I want to be very clear in that I don't think determination, strength and confidence exclusive only to mothers, I have plenty of non-parent friends who totally astound me with there steely grit and gung-ho for the world. I am saying that for me, motherhood was the catalyst for these qualities and I couldn't be more grateful.

If you are a 'mother' (to anybody- you might be a carer, animal owner or relative to a child), what qualities do you think this experience of responsibility has instilled in you? Am I the only one who feels this way?

Items IHeart: Kitchen Storage!

This month I have really been thinking hard about our kitchen and how it functions for us.  I am sure many of you can relate when I say that the kitchen is the most common and heavily used area in the home.  Sort of the "hub" if you will. 

I am always taking note of the things that work and what absolutely is not, and try to problem solve those problematic areas, which I then share with you darling friends.  And although our kitchen isn't perfect, as I sit and reflect on it this month, there are quite a few items we have been using for years and years that have made our lives in the kitchen so much simpler and easier.  So today, instead of reflecting on the bad, I am going to reflect on the GREAT!  And share with you items that I specifically heart to use in our own kitchen {and two that have made their way onto my wish list for the future}.

Now, time to review:

1. I am not a huge fan of kitchen counter clutter, I am however, a fan of easy access and being smart about storage.  Keeping a pretty utensil jar on our counter next to the stove keeps daily cooking utensils right within reach and allows you to use your drawers to store less frequently used items and everything else you don't want out in the open.
2. I use small baskets all over my kitchen.  I keep one on the opposite side of the stove, to corral cooking oils and vinegars.  I also use them in my cupboards to group common food packets and small food packages together.
3. By now, you all know I am the biggest advocate for drawer liners in any shape, color or style.  Not only do they allow you to quickly wash up and clean out your drawers, but they also add a happy smiling surprise every time you reach in to grab a measuring spoon or apple cutter.
4. Pull out drawers are the best.invention.ever.  We were fortunate enough to have our already installed within our cabinet when the home was built, but I can't imagine life without them.  They allow you to easily gain access to items stored in the back of the cabinet, that are typically out of site, out of mind.
5. If there is anything I want out of site, out of mind, in the kitchen, it is our knives.  Not necessarily for our sake, but because our kids are in the kitchen just as much as we are.  By using a drawer knife block organizer, we are able to keep the knives tucked away and add a child safety mechanism to the drawer as well.
6. Large glass jars are awesome for keeping frequently used baking items, cereals and puppy treats on your counter, while doubling as adorable, functional accessories.
7. These shelves are wish list item number one for me.  They double the available storage space within a cabinet, and allow dishes to be stacked for simpler access.
8. We added a bakeware organizer to our cabinet a few years ago and it has made life so much simpler ever since.  It allowed us to place our baking sheets and cutting boards vertically vs. horizontally stacked.  Now, they just slide in and out with ease vs. having to dig through a stack.
9. This fam of five goes through a lot of cereal.  So by using cereal keepers we can always see our inventory {we absolutely can't allow it to run out or we will have grumpy kids, lol}, and it keeps it fresh for longer, since when we keep cereal in the box, the bag tends to be left open.
10. Wish list item number two is the tiered cabinet organizer.  Or, I may just DIY one, but regardless, I love that it allows you to easily see items in the back of a cabinet, so nothing is forgotten and everything is within reach.
11. The multi-purpose bins are typically used for the home office and around the house, but I find they work best in the kitchen in the fridge or freezer for keeping food contents separated and organized.
12. Drawer organizers have been a winner around here for years.  Rummaging isn't the name of the game, and organizers not only prevent things from getting mixed up within the drawers, they also prevent you from placing too many things in without thinking about where they belong.
13. Since food is expensive, we store leftovers, freshly cut fruits and vegetables in glass food storage containers.  I went with glass a few years ago since they are BPA free and keep food contents nice and cold.  Plus, they last far longer than any plastic option I have come across.  Well worth our investment.
14. I have to admit, iHeart my coffee tin.  It's the simple things.  I don't use ground coffee, which I think the tin was initially intended for, but I do toss my box of K-Cups inside and keep it right next to the coffee maker.  Again, any way to group common items together wins in this kitchen!
15. Raise your hand if you have paper piles on your counter.  That was us too.  Every single day.  Then, I invested in a wall pocket system and now we can sort family papers in their appropriate bin, hang our keys, drop our change and keep stamps and notepads all within reach, but not on the counter.
16. For all of our dried foods, we now store them in clear, air tight containers.  We can always see what we have, everything stays fresh and by adding a vinyl label on the side, I can use a chalk marker to write in the date that we put the food within the container.  Now it I never have to question how old something is or if it is still good enough to eat.
17. No kitchen is complete without mason jars.  They are so versatile for everything from spices to sprinkles.  I am in love.
18. Our kitchen isn't huge, but it isn't small either.  However, we did eventually outgrow it as our family grew.  I don't hoard excessive entertaining pieces or small appliances, but we did need to expand our storage.  Purchasing a sideboard cabinet allowed us to have a place to store serving items, crock pots, food sealers and tea kettles.  It greatly expanded our storage for all of those things we don't use daily, but still use often enough to keep, and was far less costly than building a new kitchen or home.

Heart Hot Chocolate

I whipped up a batch of these cool whip hearts last year and they were SO easy and such a success that I couldn’t not do them again this year! 



Thaw a tub of cool whip, mix in a few drops of red food coloring, spread in a parchment lined pan, refreeze and then use a cookie cutter to make hearts.  Add a little mix of pretzels, cheerios, peanuts and conversation hearts and you’ve got a sweet and easy afternoon snack!  See last year’s full how-to post here.

Pink Velvet & Berry Parfait

My husband rocks. He is so passionate about cooking & even though he's not a professional chef, his meals really impress me. 

I'm always posting them on my instagram, so if you follow me there, you'll see what I mean. He made these amazing parfaits for the LOVE LETTERS/Cartas De Amor digital Mag we put together, they were delicious! Below he'll add the recipe in case you want to impress your significant other! Parfaits:
Cake (any kind of sponge or regular cake like the pink velvet)
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup confectioner's sugar (powdered)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Berries - cut strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries

In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream with a whisk attachment until it begins to peak. Add the sugar and vanilla and finish whipping - should be light, soft peaks.

Cut small cubes of the cake and place in the bottom of a parfait or tall shooter glass (if you don't have those, champagne or wine glasses also work well). Carefully spoon about 2 tsp of cream on top then gently knock the bottom of the glass to force it down. Add a layer of berries, then another layer of cream. Top with an exceptional berry, or even a nice bing cherry!

little known fact

I am a violent sneezer.  When I sneeze, it's LOUD and obnoxious and I double-over and my entire body jerks with the force of expelling boogers and saliva out of my nose and mouth.  When I sneeze, everybody within a 20-foot radius knows it.  The sound and the atmospheric pressure tips them off. 

Knowing this, I crouch and bend my head low to the ground, assuming a position similar to the one we learned would protect us from a nuclear blast during the 70's.  

Only instead of covering the back of my head, I cover my face.

I also try to maintain an upright or prostrate position for fear of throwing out my back.

Right now I've got about 5 minutes before I can leave the house to grocery shop and swing by the post office.  I have to time my errands with my cold medication.  About 15 minutes after I take cold medicine, my body launches into a sneezing fit.  For about 10 minutes after the initial sneezing fit, I'll periodically heave out a random "ATCHOOOO!" and then I'm good to go for about 2 hours before I'll sneeze again. 

When I sneeze, I'm worthless.  I can't hold them back, muffle their force or function because my body's jerking and I'm busy keeping both hands up to my face.  I definitely don't want the sneezing to hit while I'm in the produce department--spewing germs all over my fellow shoppers and the food for sale.  Then there's the inconvenience of leaving my shopping cart while I flee to the bathroom to scrub my hands.  It's scary to start sneezing while driving in the Momvan, too.  And there's no rhyme or reason to the amount of mucus expelled when I sneeze.  Could be a real juicy one, could be fairly dry.  There's no way to predict it which leads to more potential public humiliation.  And a sneezing fit leaves me a little exhausted and breathless from all the exertion.

So I watch the clock after swallowing a couple Advil Cold/Sinus.  Bide my time quarantined in a safe place until they're over.  Then I can catch my breath, scrub my hands and leave the house.

Paper Valentine

  I had been meaning to read a book by Breena Yovanoff for quite some time, but didn't get a chance to do so until now. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley, I was able to read an advanced reader's copy of Yovanoff's latest release, Paper Valentine, a subtle book of love and death. I enjoyed the book for the most part, but I was left somewhat unsatisfied.

Description (from Goodreads): The city of Ludlow is gripped by the hottest July on record. The asphalt is melting, the birds are dying, petty crime is on the rise, and someone in Hannah Wagnor’s peaceful suburban community is killing girls. For Hannah, the summer is a complicated one. Her best friend Lillian died six months ago, and Hannah just wants her life to go back to normal. But how can things be normal when Lillian’s ghost is haunting her bedroom, pushing her to investigate the mysterious string of murders? Hannah’s just trying to understand why her friend self-destructed, and where she fits now that Lillian isn’t there to save her a place among the social elite. And she must stop thinking about Finny Boone, the big, enigmatic delinquent whose main hobbies seem to include petty larceny and surprising acts of kindness.
  With the entire city in a panic, Hannah soon finds herself drawn into a world of ghost girls and horrifying secrets. She realizes that only by confronting the Valentine Killer will she be able move on with her life—and it’s up to her to put together the pieces before he strikes again.

Review: The sleepy, small-town community Hannah Wagnor grew up in used to feel safe, but now, during a record-breaking July heat wave, a serial killer is targeting young girls. Like her setting, Hannah use to be a happy go-lucky girl but she has been hiding her depression since her best friend Lillian's death six months earlier. Hannah goes through the motions of daily life with a happy, superficial outlook such as dressing in bright colors and smiling when she's filled with sadness inside. She is constantly haunted by Lillian's ghost at her side and hears Lillian's running commentary of all the choices she makes from her clothes to her classmates. As more bodies are discovered, Hannah begins to see more ghosts-those of the murdered girls and begins to feel responsible to catch the serial killer. Investigating the deaths, she begins to wonder how much she really knows about Finny Boone, the cute bad boy she's has a crush on forever but is only just beginning to understand.
  The narrative tone of Paper Valentine is very detached and numb just like our heroine. Hannah's depression is believable. Her insecurities are tangible and the realizations of how Lillian truly was as a person is startlingly and insightful. The friendship between Hannah and Lillian is what I remember the most from this book. Lillian is the leader, obsessed about finding perfection, and slowly kills herself with anorexia. Hannah is the follower, who blindly trusts Lillian and is afraid to speak openly about her own opinions and desires. With the loss of Lillian,  Hannah has also lost her own self of identity. As the story progresses, we see Hannah thaw but it is inconsistent to her actions. For instance, Hannah has always been the dependable, responsible older sister who keeps her sisters safe, a quality that I greatly admire. When she begins to embrace her emotions, however, she starts a romance with the shady, distant, and mysterious Finny Boone at the cost of leaving her younger sisters alone with a serial killer running around their town. Of course I understood that Finny isn't what he appears to be and has a painful past, but there more than enough warning bells that went off that would make Hannah think twice before running around with him in dark places alone. To say the least, I was a bit perplexed of what to make our heroine and her choices.
  Paper Valentine has an overambitious story that bounces from important and big topics such as guilt, depression, and eating disorders to child abuse, foster families, serial murder, and mean girls. The book takes on so many issues that the characters and plot remain underdeveloped. Though the book seems to be marketed as a supernatural/paranormal murder mystery, the murders just hang in the periphery of the characters. There were quite a few times while reading the book that I forgot the murders even existed. Though there are some creepy moments in the book, the murderer, once revealed, seems random and lacks real motive, and his ultimate confession to Hannah felt underwhelming and anticlimactic. It seems as if the clues to discover the murderer were far more important than any insight into the psychology of a murderer or the fate of the ghosts in the end. Though it is engrossing at times, Paper Valentine moves at a slow pace and leaves too many loose ends, too many questions unanswered.
 Paper Valentine is not my last book by the author and I do look forward to reading her earlier books as well as future releases.

Valentine’s Hot Chocolate Basket + Stirring Spoons

Like last year, the PCP is giving his teacher a little hot chocolate gift basket for a Valentine’s treat.  It’s really easy and affordable to pull together and, let’s face it, who wouldn’t like to get a basket of hot chocolate with all the fixins?!?!

 

The red spoons, cups, napkins, marshmallows and basket are all from the Dollar Tree.  To make the little hot chocolate stirring spoons, melt a handful of chocolate candy melts in the microwave.  Spoon the melted chocolate into a zip top bag, snip one end and squirt into the spoons.  Use a knife to level, dot with sprinkles and chill until hardened.  Since I already had the candy melts, sprinkles and hot chocolate packets, the whole shebang cost me $6 for TWO baskets!

Last year’s basket was a little different, but equally as cheap and cute :-)  We have a few spoons left to try ourselves, and I can’t think of a better snack on yet another rainy day!  (Other than the chocolate raspberry cake pops at Starbucks, that is.  Daddy-O bought them for the littles yesterday and I can’t seem to get the ONE bite the baby deigned to share off my mind…)

FOOD: Heart-Shaped Napoleon with Raspberries

Hi everyone! Alison from Heart of Gold & Luxury blog! I'm here with my first post for MadeByGirl!  I am excited to share with you an impossibly romantic dessert to enjoy with your sweetie this Valentine’s day.  The Napoleon is a classic dessert that combines layers of flaky puff pastry, luxuriously rich pastry cream scented with almond and vanilla, topped with plump ruby red raspberries and finished with a dusting of confectioners sugar.

This dessert might look intimidating but it is incredibly easy - you just have to use your creative eye to assemble this confection. This is one recipe that will impress your other half, not to mention your friends and family. In fact, you just might have them wishing that this day filled with roses and chocolates would come around more than once a year.

Ingredients:
16 ounces puff pastry, dethawed
2 cups whole milk
½ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon pure almond extract
½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
4 egg yolks
¼ cup cornstarch
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, diced
½ pint fresh raspberries or strawberries

Equipment: Heart-shaped cookie cutter (optional)

 
For the Pastry Cream:
Combine 2 cups milk, ¼ cup sugar, almond extract, vanilla extract and pinch of salt in a small pan. With stovetop on medium heat, allow for mixture to come to a simmer. Set aside.

In a bowl, combine 4 egg yolks, ¼ cup sugar and ¼ cup cornstarch. Slowly whisk in the warm milk mixture to combine.  Pour mixture back into pan and return to medium heat, stirring constantly.  Pastry cream will begin to thicken rapidly.  Once mixture is thickened remove from heat, add butter and stir until combined.  Pour into a heat-safe bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Be sure to coat the top of the pastry cream with the wrap, otherwise you will have a film that forms on the top.  Allow to cool completely in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours or up to 2 days.

 For Napoleon Assembly:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.  Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.  Unroll puff pastry and place on lined baking sheet.  Pierce holes with a fork all over the dough.  Place a heavier baking sheet on top (a Pyrex pan is perfect) and allow to cook for approximately 25 minutes. Pastry is done with it is golden brown.  Allow to cool completely.  Once cooled, cut out pastry into hearts if desired.  Place pastry cream into a sealed plastic ziplock bag.  Cut the tip off and fill one side of the pastry with cream, top with raspberries and then place another piece of pastry on top. Finish with a dusting of confectioners sugar. 

*Makes about 3 to 4 servings depending on size of cookie-cutter
