Scene: breakfast with Mr. T--he's munching a bagel and I'm writing the day's to-do list. NPR's Morning Edition is playing on the radio--a report about a fashionista living on a budget to save money. She goes to the library for free internet, practices tai chi in the park instead of joining a gym and forgoes trips to Starbucks. "I'll do anything so I don't have to move back in with my parents," she says.
Me: (thinking to myself) Damn straight, sister. I remember when I was 18--I couldn't get out fast enough.
Mr. T: (looks up at me with the most honest expression) Well that's just nuts.
I'm blown away that he was paying any attention to the news--that thrills me. I'm also amazed that my kid can't imagine leaving--his remark was the greatest vote of confidence.
