For our Anniversary Extravaganza, Mr. D and I went to New Glarus on Thursday. Walking through "Little Switzerland" and admiring the quaint shops, the overflowing windowboxes, the clean streets and inviting storefronts was almost as lovely as "Actual Switzerland." Just missing the majesty of the Alps. And Americans don't have the same flair in their dress.
New Glarus is on a state trail, so we crossed the path from our "Alpine Lodge" and joined the hikers and bikers for a brief stint before touring the town. To our delight we didn't see a single McDonald's, Walmart, KMart, Walgreens, Subway, or any other franchise besides the BP station by highway. Small town America does exist still. After a few blocks we realized that New Glarus is also home to many cows.
Having missed the Heidi Festival and William Tell Days, we strolled past the bakery, flower shop, pubs and restaurants. We ate steak in a supper club and had drinks in 2 bars. We saw the town's park which hummed with activity--volleyball, swimming, swinging and biking. Our "suite" had a balcony from where we could look into the courtyard below. From our "box seats" we listened to the accordion player entertaining the, ahem, elderly patrons gathered below. I should've guessed when I booked the room and the woman on the phone asked about my AARP card that New Glarus appeals to a particular demographic. There was a miniature golf course and this water fountain, adding more reasons why I loved this town.
I found him perched above the dart machine in the local sports bar. Mr. D and I suspected he was a Badger fan.
I'll definitely return to New Glarus someday. Besides being the origin of one of my favorite beers, it's everything good and decent and interesting.
