back from iowa

and off to the beach.  The boys have never experienced Lake Michigan.  Can you believe such a thing?  It's time to correct this lapse in my parenting STAT.  Tomorrow there will be playing in the dunes, splashing in the waves, licking of the ice cream cones and admiring of the landscape.  Hopefully the vibe won't be too pumpkin/orchard/fall-ish for my taste because I'm really still into summer.

Speaking of summer, the tomatoes and peppers are coming in like it's their job.  Which it is, actually.  And I played a smashing game of golf yesterday with Mr. D on our anniversary.  When I forget everything the golf lessons tried to teach me, I'm not too shabby out there on the links.  And I played 18 holes with the same golf ball.  This would be more impressive if it were a difficult course, but it really isn't.  The biggest challenge was playing in rain, but you can't complain about rain when you're standing in the middle of corn fields destroyed by drought.

In other news, Mr. B and Mr. G are discussing their secret journal, which isn't terribly secret (especially since they ask me how to spell every third word), but I do like that they're applying pen to paper and expressing themselves that way.  It's so much easier to love these knuckleheads when they're not zoned out in front of a screen ...

A carload of football players just left our driveway--the annual blitz to sell their fundraiser cards.  Years ago I tried to give a kid cash and told him to keep the card and all the money for his team.  He explained that they have a quota to sell, so not taking a card didn't help him out.  Aha.  So now I'm the proud owner of a Happyland Football Card, entitling me to great deals on cheeseburgers, movie rentals, batting cages and other local offerings.  The trick, now, is to remember to use it.

Spill it, reader.  What's coming in strong in your neck of the woods this week?
