It's true. I'm a bit of a slob and have taken to wearing aprons almost every day. I wear them when making food. I wear them when cleaning. I wear them when volunteering at the PS cafeteria (even though no one else wears aprons there--I bring my own and everyone thinks I'm funny that way). Aprons keep my shirts and the fronts of my jeans or shorts from getting wet or messy. Aprons give me a convenient spot to dry my hands. Aprons with pockets let me carry a cell phone around the house or tote Legos and Nerf bullets and other stray bits and pieces I find while tidying up.
I like to start my day with a shower and a clean set of clothes, but my dirtiest jobs generally happen first thing in the morning--gardening, doing dishes, scrubbing the bathrooms. Aprons let me stay fresh and clean without compromising the order of my shower time and chore time. I confess, if I could get away with wearing a housedress, I think I would. I totally get the sense behind an outfit made specifically for wearing while working around the house.
I like how aprons make me feel retro. They're a fun dash of color over my jeans and t-shirts. I have an apron inherited from my grandmother, a ruffled red and white with some embroidery details, my "fancy" occasion apron. I have a souvenir apron from Mama Mia, it's heavy canvas and has an adjustable neck loop. I have an apron that looks just like your grandmother's kitchen tablecloth--checked with fruit printed against the pattern. Mr. D bought it for me years ago in a church basement during a Ghost Player weekend in Chisholm, Minnesota. That's the one I grab most often, the pockets are deep and I am ridiculously fond of anything handmade by church ladies. The best aprons have a bib for full frontal coverage--no point in just wearing an apron skirt because how's that going to protect your clothes?
Of all the handy and affordable things Kathy over at Four Dog Day makes, aprons are among the most useful. Not that it's my job to tell you what to pick--but if I pick your comment out of all the comments left here since last week Thursday, well, you might want me to buy you one of Kathy's aprons if you haven't got one already. For September's FABULOUS, I'm giving away one item from Kathy's Etsy store, Four Dog Day, to one lucky commenter. I'll pick a name Wednesday.
Spill it, reader. Do you own an apron? Do you wear it?
