waxing nostalgic

I drove Mr. B and a buddy to a birthday party today in Mr. D's Taurus. They sat in the back seat rolling down the windows and relishing the thrill that comes from having wind in your face while traveling 65 mph down the highway.

"I feel like a man!" Mr. B declared.

"I feel strong! Like a buffalo!" his friend agreed.

I tried to recall those early days of driving--how free they felt. Running errands and schlepping kids around in a dented beige Momvan doesn't smack of glamour and independence. The rest of the way home, I pretended I was 16, driving a brown Chevy Citation alone for the first time on a hot summer day. I turned up the radio to hear the Bangles and cracked the front window for effect. It was easier to conjure up those memories driving a car instead of a van--the Taurus is much sportier. Someday those boys will know the joy of, too. I'd pretty much forgotten.

Mr. G picks a Fabulous Winner!

Shelly over at Surviving Munchkinland is the winner of Nina Romano's Coffeehouse Meditations and a $5 Starbucks gift card! Congratulations, Shelly! Shoot me an email with your mailing address so you can enjoy some poetry and a coffee on me!

Spill it, reader. What's the best road trip song for a long drive?
