How To :: Graduated Glitter Nails

If, like me, you love nail varnish and like to have pretty little paws that add a splash of colour or a twinkle of glitter to your overall look, then this will be the post for you!

For the longest time I've drooled over other people's beautiful nail art blog posts and looked longingly at the tutorial videos that made intricate details and swirly designs look oh-so-easy.

Sadly for me, I just don't have that steady a hand and my nails end up looking like a dog's dinner. *Sigh*.

So with all that in mind, imagine my joy to find a sparkly nail art technique that is so easy even me and my sausage fingers can pull off! I give you- Graduated Glitter Nails.

How do I do this snazzy nail look on my own pinkies?

1. Do whatever nail prep you usually do.

2. Pick a colour and paint it evenly all over the nail.

3. Take glitter polish and paint a thin coat from about 3/4 of the way up to the tip and leave to dry.

4. As number 3 but from about 1/2 way up to the tip and leave to dry.

5. As number 3&4 but from 1/4 of the way up and leave to dry.

6. Apply top coat.

Simples.

My Tips for Top Talons:

♥ If you are new to this technique, choose a lighter base colour as it is more forgiving on any heavy handedness glitter-wise. Currently I'm wearing a lilac with silver glitter and it looks amazing. I did take a snap but my hands are suffering in this cold weather at the mo, so I thought best not to share.

♥ Be gentle with the glitter, the aim is to build it up sloooowwwllyyy.

♥ Be aware that this is a lot of polish on you nails, especially at the tips. I have found this has led to easier chipping. Not a problem but if you're going out Saturday night, don't apply on a Wednesday and expect them to still look perfecto. Plan it properly.

I absolutely adore this look. It gives you a chance to use glitter in a more sophisticated way and I'm looking forward to experimenting with more colours. For those that are interested, the colours in in my fancy demo above are OPI 'We have a purple' and OPI 'Spark de Triomphe'. I buy my nail wheels for £1.99 in packs of 10, from this ebay store.

It's chockablock with glitter, it goes on your nails, it's from OPI. I'm happy. Then end.

Haha, I jest, that's not the review over, but it may as well be because I'm in luurrvee with this sparkly little baby.

This is 'Rainbow Connection' by OPI from the Muppets Collection that is being bought out for Christmas.

As you can see with your own fair peepers, it is a glitter polish with various sized flecks of silver, gold, turquoise, red, green and purple. It retails for £10.50 and you can purchase it from the Lena White website.

I've been asked a few times where else you can buy OPI Polishes from for those of you who aren't internet shoppers. Quite a few beauty salons stock them, as well as Sally's, Liberty of London and John Lewis. However, for the full range, I really would shop online. I will just say that when I looked on the website, you couldn't buy 'Rainbow Connection' individually and it only came in a duo. Check back regularly because I think they might change this in the approach to the festive season.

What can I say about this polish that you can't see from the snazzy picture?

It took about 3 coats to achieve an opaque look. I say 'about' because I had to do a bit of dabbing-brush-in-sparsely-covered-areas painting. This leaves a rather lumpy chunky feel to your nail but as the actual liquid is clear, nobody will know and you'll have a full coverage of glitter- yippee.

If you liked Deborah Lippmann's 'Happy Birthday', then you'll like this. A lot.

If you hankered for OPI's sparkly Alice In Wonderland 'Mad as a Hatter' and missed out, then grab this now- I think it'll be another sought after one like that. (After writing this post, I started  thinking about yearning for 'Mad as a Hatter' and so have found it HERE  on ebay- I do heart that place so).

I think it will look smashing over black or navy varnishes.

It was a nightmare to remove. But, like childbirth, it was oh so worth it. Usually I would think £10.50 is a little steep for a nail product, but this is special.

My Nail Wheels

In the comments on my last couple of nail polish videos, I have seen one question crop up over and over.

"Where did you buy that nail wheel?"

Well Sprinklerinos, I shall tell you. They were cheapypeapy ones from THIS EBAY SHOP  and have been worth every penny!

If you, like me, are the kinda gal that likes to make videos or blogposts, but doesn't always have perfect nails to model them on, these can be your saviour! Ooorr, if you are a little bit obsessive and wanted to catalogue your collection, this might be your bag. *Goes of to start painting wheels*.

Lou's Reviews :: Sleek PPQ Me, Myself & Eye Palette

Yep, as with all my posts for the next few days, I'm pretty late on this one. Florida and family life prevented me being as on the ball as I (like to think) usually am.

So without further ado, here is the latest Sleek MakeUp eyeshadow palette, just waiting to be added to your collection. Does anyone else collect the palettes?

Sleek's Me, Myself and Eye Palette is said to be inspired by PPQ's S/S11 collection and aims to toughen up a soft feminine silhouette- oh lala.

With a mixture of frost and matte and a wide variety of colours, you would think this would be a winner. For me it isn't. I'm all for lots of colour if it works, like in the original palette, but this seems all a little haphazard. Mint, red, peach and olive all in a row for example, there isn't a happy flow there, in my eyes anyway.

Also, (haha as if I hadn't finished being negative!), matte colours aren't my bag. I'm all for a bit of shimmer and I find matte colours can be pretty chalky with poor pigmentation. Saying that, there will be people out there in the big wide world, who prefer matte shades, so who am I to talk?

Some shmexy swatching for you there m'dears. I think the bottom deep green colour will look beautiful for Christmas.

Apologies for not going into too much detail for this beauty review, but I don't want to rave about something that doesn't float my boat and I'm not in the business of full on slating products. Beauty is only an opinion after all.

Baby Glitter OPI Mini Stems Kit Giveaway

As a relative newbie to OPI Nail Polish I was pretty bloomin' excited when these jewelled treasures popped through my letterbox, pretty excited indeed!

Above: Guy Meets Gal-Veston (Texas Collection), Housten We Have A Purple (Texas Collection), Spark De Triomphe (Serena Glam Slam France Collection) and Austin-Tatious Turquoise. All polishes from the snazzy Texas Collection retail for £10.50.

In conjunction with the tennis season, OPI have bought out a tres cool shatter range, aptly named Serena Glam Slam France Collection. What a lot of pies Ms Williams has her tennis champ fingers in eh? The Gram Slam collection comprises of 3 jazzy duo sets of polish- one shatter and one colour/glitter. My set is a bright white shatter and a gold and silver sparkly (Spark de Triomphe). The sparkly is AMAZING! A mixture of fine and very very fine glitter it applies almost opaque with sparkle in just one coat. With more coats it is totally opaque- a rarity with glitter polish!

I tried the white shatter over one of the Texas Collection Polishes (Housten We Have a Purple) and wasn't entirely in love with the finish, a bit tipexy, but I think it will look a million times better over the Spark de Triomphe- I shall keep you posted. Perhaps I will apply it this week in honour of Wimbelondon starting and give you a fun NOTD?

The box is very professional and give a simple guide to shatter and the effect you can expect. I really like this wordy/picture element because although us Beauty Bloggers have all read and seen shatter in action, many women will not have and I think will find it pretty nifty! I also love that the range comes in the little boxes becase they are easy to wrap and make cool little gifts, or, if like me you are a horder and keep the boxes, you'll like them too!

 

Guy Meets Gal-Veston- A jelly orange. Took 4 coats to be opaque, which for me is too many, I draw the line at 3. However, it was an extremely smooth ride, great formula and with a China Glaze top coat, didn't chip for over a WEEK- this is a first for any of my collection!

Austin-Tascious Turquoise- Mermaidy bluey-green metalic. Looks beautiful against a tan and works well as a toe colour. I've had it on my tootsies for a couple of weeks and it's going strong. I've noticed that in some lights it also has a pinky-purple gleam to it too- puurrddddyyy!

Houston We Have A Purple- Medium toned berry purple, requires 2-3 coats but glides on smoothly and is worth the effort. My Auntie Judith described it as a 'sumptious fruity colour' and it really is, like ribena on your nails. I have also worn this with one coat and then one coat of Spark De Triomphe on and loved that combo so much I forced Lee from fanx hq to say how marvellous it looked- hahaha! Thanks Lee!

My most favourite combo- like cheese and crackers, jinglyjanglys and shakeyshakeys (YouTuberinos will know what I'm talking about!), this just works. Summer sizzle!

All in all, I am beyond impressed with these nail varnishes and the others in my collection (Pink Me I'm Good- baby pink with gold sparkles- hello you beauty!). I do think £10.50 is a lot of money for one polish but I would justify it to myself by thinking about how many wears you get out of a bottle and how it truly is the best quality polish I have tried.

I also made a YouTube video about these which you can watch HERE. Baby Glitter was being a bit of a monkey in it though so do let us off for our all-ver-the-place-ness!

Pro Impressions and OPI Silver Shatter

With all this lovely sunshineyness, I've been heavily inpsired to splash colour into every area of my life, and my nails have not missed out on this.

I bought this nail polish remover at the Beauty UK convention which I showed in my YouTube Haul video that you can see HERE. Since trying it a good few times I can happily report that it is BRILLIANT.

It has quite a strong smell that can get a bit up your nose but I'll let that go seeing as it does it's job sooooo well- it even cuts right through glitter, which to me is the real mark of a good remover. I've been using it with the special nail varnish remover sqaures (as shown in the video) or regular cotton wool and it works fabulously with both. Fancying a jazzy nail effect, I decided to try out my new OPI Silver Shatter, which I also bought at the Beauty UK convention for a bargainous £5.75 (ish. I know it was in the £5 range), which is superduper considering this retails for £10.50.

I'm quite certain you all will have read about these new fandangled shatter polishes and know that with just one coat on top of another colour, they create a cracked effect. I was never too keen on the standard black shatter colour that Barry M bought out, I felt it was a little too stern for my personal style, but this really caught my eye because it's much more subtle and has a hint of sparkle to it- Yippee!

I applied the OPI Silver Shatter over Boots No.17 Catwalk Couture (click HERE for more) and thoroughly enjoyed watching the polish separate and 'shatter' before my very eyes! It was oddly mesmorising actually!

I've really enjoyed this summery beachy nail look and it has lasted a good 5 days with only minimal chipping. Woop Woop!
