Lovely Laundry Room Lighting

Just when I thought I couldn't adore our laundry room more....  I found this!

The most challenging pendant to photograph in a zero natural light room....

It looks pretty right?  I love the over-sized yellow drum shade, but the best part is the inside!

I found the shade last week at one of the new World Markets that opened up here in the twin cities.  I actually went seeking out another possible option, but when I saw this, I knew it was "the one".

The cost was $28 on sale!  I couldn't have found a plain shade, covered it in yellow fabric and added a decorative floral tin lining inside for $28.  Not even close, so, I bought it!

I love the size, that it has an unexpected inside and that the semi-flush mount light that we already had, made it easy to just swap out the shade for this one.  No light kit or installation necessary.  It was meant to be.

It simple little switch that added so much more to the space!

Anyone else recently score a great deal on something completely unexpected?

Our Little Laundry Helpers

As I was doing a little laundry yesterday, I thought it would be worth sharing a little trick that has been working well for us.

Back in early summer, I picked up three plastic tubs from the seasonal section of Target.  They are lightweight and the perfect size for my little guys to carry around the abode.  The addition of quick vinyl labels assigned a bin to each boy.

We are always looking at ways to improve and tweak our laundry process to make it easiest for everyone.  Our kids have always been responsible for putting away their own laundry, however, in the past, they were also responsible for sorting it and putting it on their hangers, then putting it away.

For my youngest two, this sometimes went OK, and other days, it was a bit of a battle.  By the time the laundry was sorted down, they were bored with the process, distracted, and typically jumping on their beds three minutes later.  That is when we started sorting things down for the kids, straight out of the dryer and into each of their bins.

This was already a huge help for us and the kids, and the laundry process definitely got better.  But, we also noticed how time consuming it still was for them to battle putting all their clothes on their hangers, my youngest definitely was not a fan.   And now that school is in full swing and we are trying to maximize our time in the evenings, the hubs and I thought we would help them out and streamline the process a little bit more.

With a stack of their hangers on the dryer...

As we pull the laundry out of the dryer, it goes right on a hanger and right into each kid's bin.

My oldest son doesn't hang his clothes, so we just use the top of the washer to fold them quick.  Anything that doesn't get hung, such as socks, undies, pajamas, etc..., are just tossed right into the bins with their hanging clothes, and they sort those down on their own.  Once all the laundry is sorted by kid, the bins of clean clothes are distributed to each boy's bedroom and they can put their clothes away each day after school.  When they get their clothes put away, they gather any empty hangers, toss them in their empty bins and carry them back to the laundry room.

I knew it was successful the first time my kids got their laundry done in less than a minute and came out with giant grins giggling, "that was soooo easy Mom, thanks!"

For me, sorting all of our laundry straight out of the dryer doesn't add much extra time, so I don't mind doing it.  Could I also take a few extra seconds to just hang up their items and put things away for them?  Sure.  But we are believers that the kids should take responsibility for putting away their items, including laundry, so although I have made it a bit simpler for them, we still ask they take that ownership of putting it all away.

Other things we have found helpful:

  • We keep a single small hamper at the end of our hall in-between the kid's bedrooms, that they share {vs. one in each bedroom}.  They take turns bringing it to the laundry room every day or two.
  • We purchase socks that have different markings on them, based on size.  My oldest son has grey heals and my younger boys do not.  This makes it simple to sort down which socks belong to which boy.
  • We recently added a garment bag to the side of the kid's hamper so they can toss their socks inside, then, the bag can just get tossed in the wash and socks don't go missing {thanks for the suggestion readers, this was because of you and it rocks our socks off!}.

Anyone else have similar methods?  Or are you doing something completely different that is also working wonders?

Paint By Number: Basket Labeling System

Being the paint lover and DIYer that I am, keeping all those painting supplies organized is very important to me.  So this week, I decided it was time to tackle a couple of projects to help me be a little more efficient when it comes to whipping out a quick paint project.

A while back I shared my favorite paint supplies, and then I was asked, "Where do you keep all of your painting tools?"

The short answer is, in some cheapo white baskets on the top shelf in the laundry room.

For over a year now, the baskets have been doing their job keeping the supplies wrangled and concealed {clear bins would add visual clutter}.  But it stopped there.  Every single time I wanted to whip out a quick project, I would pull every bin down and search for the specific supply I needed.  Where did I toss the paint can opener the last time I used it?  Which bin had my favorite paint brush?  We need to quickly fill a hole in the wall, where is that spackle again?  Guessing and searching isn't my idea of a good time, especially when I just want to get the project wrapped up.  And without labels, the baskets were never guaranteed to make their way back to the same location on the shelf.

So, I started out by loosely categorizing each bin, and sorted accordingly.

Caulks, putties and adhesives in one, miscellaneous painting tools in another and paint applicators in the third.

I brainstormed all sorts of labeling ideas.  Luggage tags, laminated labels, etc... but in the end, there didn't seem to be straight forward way to label all of the contents that were in each bin; there were so many miscellaneous items in each one that I would never be able to read the small print from down below.

A simple 1, 2, 3 label would do the trick.  I like how they look, and I could just create a simple reference list down at ground level.

Each basket received a spray painted house number, and the contents in each basket were listed on a printable I quickly whipped up.

I decided to hang the list in a frame since it is a laundry room and it is exposed to lint and cleaning supplies and sprays.  Since the contents of the bins rarely change, it would be no biggie to pull it out of the frame and add to the list.

Now I know what is in each bin without question!  Time to get painting!

A labeling system that is easy as 1, 2, 3!  {Sorry, couldn't resist!}

This method could be applied in so many areas around the home, I especially love the idea of using it for managing storage bin contents in a garage or storage room.  We also use the 1, 2, 3 system frequently around the home for the kids and it has been a huge time life saver!  Each kid understands their birth order number and everything from their bathroom hooks to their water bottles are labeled with their designated number.  Quick, easy and effective!

How has a numbering system worked for you in the past?   Do you looove it as much as I do?

Laundry Room Update: Airing Our Clean Laundry

Sometimes you give things a whirl and they just don't work out.  We have learned to appreciate that around here.  We try things, and if/when they don't go exactly as planned or are they don't work as effectively as they could, we revisit them.

Awhile back I had read a tip that using a towel bar in the laundry room is a great way to create a simple drying rack.  So, that is what we did.

I would drape a sweater or shirt over the double rod towel bar, and it worked great.... when I only washed one delicate thing.  That meant washing important pieces of clothing in shifts or laying things out over the washer, random furniture or even hanging them in the shower.  I also recently decided that I would rather hang my shirts to dry vs. popping them through the dryer since it avoids any shrinking and wrinkling that is typically caused by the dryer.  So, I started brainstorming ways to get a drying rack installed...

The way our laundry room is laid out, there is no room above the washer and dryer or utility sink for a drying area, so I knew it would have to be somewhere on the opposite wall.  It didn't take me long to realize that a simple shimmy of the linen cabinet to the left, and I would be able to place a bar between the cabinet and the wall.  Easy peasy!

But a single bar from the cabinet to the wall really wouldn't feel all that finished, so I decided to complicate the solution a smidge by adding a bridge and some molding over the top of the bar, so it felt like it was all intentional and "built in".

We started by moving the cabinet down where we wanted it, and installing a painted corbel {from Home Depot} to the side of the cabinet.  To do this, we just screwed through the inside of the cabinet directly into the solid wood corbel.

As you can see in the photo, we also began the installation of the rod that would span from the cabinet to the wall.  We went with an expandable closet rod from Home Depot.

We installed the second corbel by screwing directly through the corbel into the wall.

The point of the corbels was slightly decorative but mostly supportive.  However, only supportive of a small piece of melamine board, cut down to the span of the cabinet to the wall.

Since that looks completely unfinished and silly, B quickly popped up a couple pieces of crown molding to finish things up a bit!

Some painters caulk filled in all of the air nail holes, screw holes and molding joints, and the last step was to install the closet rod.

Now the linen cabinet appears to be a large built in laundry land cabinet.

A view of it all straight on:

Now I am not only able to air my clean laundry, I am also airing my dirty laundry to all of blog land.  Awesome.

Many fabulous things came from this project that I am pretty excited about:
  • I have given myself plenty of room to air dry our clothing.
  • Our guest bathroom has never had a towel bar, so now we can recycle the one from the laundry room to the guest bathroom.
  • Our laundry room has a more polished and finished feeling.
  • I got to purchase some of my favorite white wooden hangers from IKEA.  Something about wooden hangers really get my heart racing...  Am I airing too much?

The only real flaw with the whole setup is that there is a lot of white on white on white happening on that side of the room which is much different than the opposite side...

So I am challenging myself to solve that problem in the near future...

But for now, here is a side by side to better show where the cabinet landed:

I love when I can expand storage drying capacity, with a couple of simple steps and very little budget {we already had the melamine board and crown leftover from other projects, so it was just an investment of the corbels and closet bar}.

Don't you love how molding can instantly take a typical piece of furniture and give it such a finished and polished effect?  Anyone else doing quickie modifications that make a big impact and leave you with a dorky permagrin like mine?  Do tell!

Today, I get to show you a couple of my most favorite spaces, and that is my laundry room and my playroom!  If you are new to IHeart Organizing, welcome and have fun checking out my spaces.  If you have already "seen" it all, I have a special surprise ending!

I can't express how much I LOVE LOVE our laundry room.  Nope, I don't really love to do laundry, but I do love to be in that space.  Even without any natural light, it still feels colorful and bright and I have organized every square inch!

Here are a couple of things that have helped us out in the space...

We have added a boatload of storage through an Expedit bookcase and miscellaneous storage baskets.

The baskets hold everything from light bulbs to vacuum attachments to our excess cleaning and paper products.

Floating shelves keep everyday laundry essentials right within reach:.

I stash our paint supplies in the baskets above and keep our small things in those green media boxes.  The laundry tub is where I toss our delicate wash items.

Detergents and fabric softeners are hanging out to the left in a pretty wire wall basket:

And a framed stain removal chart helps us out in a pinch!

Another wall organizer holds our ironing items:

While even more storage holds all of our lower level linens:

When it comes to sorting, we try to keep things simple with some labeled canvas sorters:

I am such a believer in loving your spaces, especially those that require you to do a little labor!

Now, on to a room where little work is involved.  In fact, it's where we get our playing on!

Our playroom is actually a GIANT work in progress and a mix and match of leftover and thrifted furniture, but it doesn't really seem to matter much what we put in it, it's just a happy place.  Our kids are growing and finally past a lot of those random little kidlet toys and more into wooden trains, blocks and Legos, lincoln logs and games galore.  If I could offer any one toy storage tip it would be this:

Pick a few select favorite "types" or sets of toys and around the holidays, ask for those to be expanded upon vs. adding many new kinds.  I found the more miscellaneous types of toys that we had to store, the more clutter we seemed to have.  Once I streamlined things and bit and the more their wooden track sets and Lego sets began to expand, the more they wanted to keep playing with those same toys and the more they could do with those sets.  Not to mention it became easier for me to containerize and categorize and simplify what we store.

We used some ReStore cabinet doors and created a place for them to display their art and creativity:

Since the boys have Lego sets that have been passed down from dad and have also been accumulating for the last 5+ years, some special storage was dedicated to their favorite activity:

To give the boys a place to draw, play and build, a thrifted coffee table was given a fresh coat of paint along with a chalkboard top:

The entertainment center was a Craigslist find and holds boatloads of games on the open shelves and toys in the cabinets below:

The playroom gets love on a daily basis, and is simple enough that it's easy to pick up and maintain.  But I have some MAJOR plans for this space and now for the secret surprise!

We have begun making plans to update the playroom with a few new colors, additional storage for a couple of toy sets being stored under our stairs, bringing in some artwork and even swapping out the light fixture!  All simple and inexpensive things that will give the most loved room in our home the finishing touches it deserves!

The first project involved $25 worth of paint that made all the difference in the room already....  Check out the entertainment center!

Stay tuned, this week I will share more playroom projects and details!
