Our Little Laundry Helpers

As I was doing a little laundry yesterday, I thought it would be worth sharing a little trick that has been working well for us.

Back in early summer, I picked up three plastic tubs from the seasonal section of Target.  They are lightweight and the perfect size for my little guys to carry around the abode.  The addition of quick vinyl labels assigned a bin to each boy.

We are always looking at ways to improve and tweak our laundry process to make it easiest for everyone.  Our kids have always been responsible for putting away their own laundry, however, in the past, they were also responsible for sorting it and putting it on their hangers, then putting it away.

For my youngest two, this sometimes went OK, and other days, it was a bit of a battle.  By the time the laundry was sorted down, they were bored with the process, distracted, and typically jumping on their beds three minutes later.  That is when we started sorting things down for the kids, straight out of the dryer and into each of their bins.

This was already a huge help for us and the kids, and the laundry process definitely got better.  But, we also noticed how time consuming it still was for them to battle putting all their clothes on their hangers, my youngest definitely was not a fan.   And now that school is in full swing and we are trying to maximize our time in the evenings, the hubs and I thought we would help them out and streamline the process a little bit more.

With a stack of their hangers on the dryer...

As we pull the laundry out of the dryer, it goes right on a hanger and right into each kid's bin.

My oldest son doesn't hang his clothes, so we just use the top of the washer to fold them quick.  Anything that doesn't get hung, such as socks, undies, pajamas, etc..., are just tossed right into the bins with their hanging clothes, and they sort those down on their own.  Once all the laundry is sorted by kid, the bins of clean clothes are distributed to each boy's bedroom and they can put their clothes away each day after school.  When they get their clothes put away, they gather any empty hangers, toss them in their empty bins and carry them back to the laundry room.

I knew it was successful the first time my kids got their laundry done in less than a minute and came out with giant grins giggling, "that was soooo easy Mom, thanks!"

For me, sorting all of our laundry straight out of the dryer doesn't add much extra time, so I don't mind doing it.  Could I also take a few extra seconds to just hang up their items and put things away for them?  Sure.  But we are believers that the kids should take responsibility for putting away their items, including laundry, so although I have made it a bit simpler for them, we still ask they take that ownership of putting it all away.

Other things we have found helpful:

  • We keep a single small hamper at the end of our hall in-between the kid's bedrooms, that they share {vs. one in each bedroom}.  They take turns bringing it to the laundry room every day or two.
  • We purchase socks that have different markings on them, based on size.  My oldest son has grey heals and my younger boys do not.  This makes it simple to sort down which socks belong to which boy.
  • We recently added a garment bag to the side of the kid's hamper so they can toss their socks inside, then, the bag can just get tossed in the wash and socks don't go missing {thanks for the suggestion readers, this was because of you and it rocks our socks off!}.

Anyone else have similar methods?  Or are you doing something completely different that is also working wonders?

Conquering Clothing Clutter: LINK PARTY!

Happy Friday everyone!  I hope you all have been finding endless satisfaction from your efforts conquering clothing clutter this week!

We have been hard at work whipping our clothes closets and drawers into shape by purging, installing systems and rethinking how we use each space.

This week I shared some inspiration and clothing clutter tips:

Gave my boys a new clothing system and weeded out the items that didn't fit any longer:

Shared a reader's closet that was well thought out and super tidy:

Conquered my own closet area by installing a functioning system and adding some other fun features:

And spruced up our oldest son's dresser:

Now today is the big day!  Time to party and share all of your organizing stories and pictures!  I have to say, this is my favorite part!  I can't wait to see what you all came up with!

And a button for you:

The link party is open for a month so there is still plenty of time to share your projects.  I hope you all take a moment to give your self a high five for what you accomplished, maybe even celebrate with a treat!  Have a lovely weekend!

Conquering Clothing Clutter: Kid's Dresser

Welcome back to "Conquer Your Clothing Clutter week!  Are you all having so much fun?  So far I have researched and shared some tips, worked on our boy's shared closet and shared some updates I made to make my own closet more functional.

Today I sharing the process of organizing my ten year old son's dresser drawers.

As I mentioned yesterday, I went in there a little frightened.  Here at the Jones abode, the boys are responsible for putting away their own laundry {and picking out their own clothes}.  So it is rare that I see the contents of my son's dresser.  Preston has a heart of gold, would do anything for anyone and I couldn't be more proud of him for endless reasons, but the kid isn't the tidiest or most organized.  It's always a work in progress to get him simple systems that are easy for him to maintain.

Since I knew his drawers really had no system, I wasn't sure what I would find... here is the before:

I will say, I was impressed that he was putting all of his shirts in one drawer, and pants and shorts in another.  High five kiddo!

But, the dresser needed some love.  I have makeover plans for the exterior of it down the line, so this post is all about the interior.

The first thing I noticed about this project, is that there was no way to divide the clothes by type.  I wasn't going to be too picky, just thought it would be easier to have pants and shorts divided, and long sleeve and short sleeves divided.

Because the drawers are all solid wood, we decided to DIY the drawer dividers out of a simple cut of 1/2" thick wood scrap wood.

To install the wooden divider, the hubs cut it to the right length and then used liquid nails to glue it inside the drawer.

And secured it in with the air nailer:

Then I gave the entire inside two quick coats of paint {with the exception of the bottom since I knew it was going to get lined.

Once the paint was dry, I used a bit of spray adhesive, the leftover pieces of wrapping paper {from this project}, and had nice new drawers!

Much better already!

In the bottom drawer, I threw a couple of ITSO bins the boys had been using to lay out their clothes the night before.  Now that I hang them, we had spare bins which couldn't be more perfect for the bottom of the dresser to divide pj's, undies and socks:

My kid's have had a clothes folder for a few years now.  My oldest had been deciding to skip it.  For this project, I re-introduced him to it.

Shirts in the top drawer:

Pants and shorts in the next drawer:

And pj's, undies {left out of the photo, wouldn't want to embarrass the kid and show his underoos to the world}, swimsuit and socks in the bottom drawer:

He was impressed by the difference.  I was impressed that he was impressed!

And now for those oh so delightful before and after pictures that make my heart sing happy songs:

During the process we made sure to check his inventory, we ended up finding just a couple of shirts to donate and realized we were short on shorts {ha! sorry, couldn't resist}.

Will he always fold his clothes so nicely?  Although with the folder it was quite quick and easy, probably not.  But I am OK with that as long as he can easily find things by using the new dividers.

Whew.  Conquering clothing clutter has come to an end {until next season of course}.  I love that some of the projects were cheap and simple, others were a mix and match of splurged on storage systems and already owned baskets and bins and some {like this dresser update} were totally free since we just used materials we already had on hand!

Next post will be a link party so everyone can share their Conquered Clothing progress!  Can't wait to see what you all have been up to!

Conquering Clothing Clutter: My Closet

Welcome back to "Conquer Your Clothing Clutter week!  How are y'all doing?  Any clothing clutter progress?  So far I have researched and shared some tips and worked on our boy's shared closet.

Today I am sharing a few updates that I made in my personal closet, to make it much more effective and easy to keep organized.

When I last left off, I was REALLY loving our recent addition of the his and hers armoires.  We had done the walk-in closet thing, and it was crowded and a challenge to share.  There was very little space to navigate, no way could we be in there at the same time.  We filled it with too many clothes we hardly wore and could never seem to agree on a consistent organizing system or where the cut-off point was for his clothes and mine.  So when we began to renovate the lower level, I decided enough was enough, a simple wall removal gave us a nice big dressing area.  The new area allowed us to use two cheapo IKEA armoires as his and hers closets.

I have been living with them since November of last year, and taking note of what was working, and more importantly, what was not.

Working:
  • The size is perfect.  It really keeps me in check with my wardrobe and clothing purchases.  I only have so much space so I really need to be selective about what I own and keep things nice and pared down.
  • The shoe rack we popped in the bottom has been splendid.
  • LOVE the huggable hangers!  They give me plenty of hanging room and nothing slips off the hangers.
  • Having my own closet space was beyond words fabulous!
  • I love that the doors conceal our storage, providing less visual clutter when everything is all closed up.

Not Working:
  • Using baskets on the top shelf for undergarments was a bit of a daily pain.
  • Using a box for tanks {on the top shelf}.  I wear tanks under my clothes daily, so another pain to pull down the box and dig through it each day.
  • The shelving was spaced far apart, so I wasn't able to maximize how it was used.  Items were all stacked on one another, my sweaters would often topple.  When I wanted to pull a pair of paints out of the stack, I had to re-stack the rest to put back.

To begin with the armoire update, I took those "problems" and started thinking of potential solutions.  Overall, the answer was simple;  I wanted to hang my pants or add extra shelves to reduce how many items needed to be stacked, and put my undergarments and tanks in drawers {vs. boxes and baskets}.

Since I couldn't add additional wooden shelving {it wasn't designed sturdy enough or with enough shelving notches}, I decided some sort of drawer system was the solution.  Who knew it would be SO hard to find anything that could work.  The size of the armoire was proving to be a bit of a challenge.  I searched high and low for solutions that were the correct width and depth.  I finally found an Elfa system at the Container Store that was intended for pantries.  Perfect depth, width and height and it had customizable drawer sizes and mix and match options so we could wave some features and take some pennies off of the final cost.  Surprisingly, this was my first ever Elfa system purchase {it is a bit pricey so I usually find alternate less expensive options}, but we had a 20% off coupon and it was the ideal solution, so we took the plunge.  I have been glowing ever since!

First order of business was labeling the bins.  I went with stick on bookplates:

The bookplates just stuck to the drawer fronts, and I slid in printed labels.

I ended up being able to remove a few items from the hanging side, and categorized the drawers as: Bras, Undies, Workout, Tanks, Long Sleeves and Denim.

Since I just took away the home of my dress pants, I found these pant hangers on sale at Target for just a couple of bucks.  I snagged two.  And because I removed some shirts from the hanging side, I had no trouble making room for the ultra slim pant hangers.

Sweaters, shorts and accessories all made their way to baskets that we already owned:

I don't mind those items remaining in bins/baskets since they are used less frequently and are now corralled {vs. stacked and tipping}.

After Monday's inspiration post, I decided I wanted to add a place to keep outfit ideas.  I have zero style, and although I have been using Pinterest to find great ideas from super fashionable bloggers, I don't check Pinterest in the morning when getting dressed so it hasn't been doing me much good.

A few square cork tiles from Target and some left over project fabric and I had new inspiration boards inside my armoire door:

Then I just browsed Pinterest and printed my favorite clothing combos:

And pinned them onto their new boards:

Throughout the entire process, I made sure to do a quick edit/paring down of items that I haven't worn in the last year.  A reader said it perfectly the other day when she said, "You only wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time".  I found that to be somewhat true, so hopefully the new idea board will change that!

Now my armoire is much more organized and functional!  Everything is simple to find and simple to put away.

How about one of those super fun before and afters?

Is it weird that I actually love putting laundry away now?

And yes, we are still super smitten with our dresser update as well!  The room is progressing nicely!

Next up.  My ten year old's dresser.  Please send me strength and well wishes as this one won't be easy, he didn't get any of his mama's organizing genes....
