Beautiful Bedroom Inspiration

One of my favorite feelings is walking into my bedroom for an afternoon nap (unfortunately this doesn't happen very often) to see that I've made the bed beautifully and everything is arranged just so.  Okay, so maybe it's not as chic as these bedrooms below (fiance's "home office") is in our bedroom...

BUT no matter how gorgeous the bedding and how beautiful the room is looking, once I lay down on the mattress I'm a little disappointed.  It's on the old, small, and firm side for me.  Mattress shopping is daunting though, so it always helps to do your research on how a mattress company manufactures their product.  Once thing I am realizing when doing my research though, is that materials and craftsmanship matter.

Of the two mattresses below, I'm sure you can tell which is going to give you a better nights sleep and be more durable.
The natural luxury mattress of wool, horsehair and coir? (Above: Mattress from 1907 )

Or a standard mattress of foam? (Mattress from Ikea)

Another really, really important factor for me is the sustainability practices a company uses, and this is what makes a product really worth the extra cost for me.  Look for company policies like those of 1907  this:

- Selecting locally sourced materials
- Using renewable and biodegradable sources
- Any plastic used is recyclable, and waste appropriately recycled.

So, even though a beautiful, glamorous bedroom may not showcase a mattress.  A beautiful, glamorous and restful bedroom does!

A guest post from Summerhouse featuring a modern and chic bedroom

Welcome to Summerhouse! I'm so excited to feature this guest post from the talented folks over at Summerhouse.  They create chic, modern, and timeless spaces that I'm sure you'll love! Enjoy their post below:

Hello, Decorology readers! We are so honored to have been given the opportunity to do a guest post for this beautiful blog today! We think Ashley does a pretty phenomenal job of curating a library of lovely images and we're honored to be a part! (Be sure to check out her guest post on our blog when you have a chance!)

Today, we wanted to share a really fun project that our lead designer, Lisa Palmer, just completed. This room is for a beautiful little girl in our hometown of Ridgeland, Mississippi named Avery who was in need of a "big girl room!"

Design by SummerHouse

Avery’s mom, Kristen, told Lisa that she wanted a room Avery could grow into, so Lisa created just that! Lisa says, “I had a blank slate, really. I knew she wanted ‘big girl,’ fun, and Avery is such a girly girl but yet a modern little girl. The rest of their house has a classic modern aesthetic so I knew I wanted to go full on modern in this space.”

"Every girl loves pink so that directed our color palette. And the client fell in love with the gray and ivory graphic carpet from Stark that I showed her so that gave us our base," says Lisa.
The main thing that makes this space so outstanding is the detail. Lisa pays very close attention to detail, and loves adding interest in unexpected places. ”I love doing something special on headboard walls so we took the gray and ivory from the carpet and striped the back wall for interest,” she says. “And at the foot of the beds, we used a shaggy wool Flokati rug and made it into benches with sleek acrylic legs.”

Avery and her parents love this new room and plan to keep it as is for years and years to come. See what a worthwhile investment great design is?!

Blissful bedrooms: Inspiration for a restful space

I am tired today. Like, super uncharacteristically tired.  Maybe because wedding planning is a full time job in itself and I drove a combined 4 hours yesterday to look at two different wedding venues, or because ever since Sandy blew through the east coast hasn't been seeing much sun.

Either way, I slept through my alarm, getting up an hour and a half late, and somehow slept-walked over to my dresser and hit snooze on my alarm NINE times and don't remember any of it.  Luckily I work for myself and from home, but I still feel like a bum when I don't get up at a reasonable hour.

Anyway, plentiful sleep aside, all I want do to is crawl under my down comforter and dream the afternoon away.  I guess this bedroom eye candy will have to do, since deadlines never care how tired you are.

Love the dark wall, the headboard, the quilt, the floors...

Okay, so this is an add for linens, but how gorgeous is that bed?

pastels always look nice in the bedroom

How cute is this?  Especially for a teenager.  And the palette bedframe adds extra storage for magazines, shoes, etc....

What do you think of the draped wall behind the bed?  It definitely adds romance and softness to the space, but I want to see it in person.

A super chic and glamorous bedroom

Lonny editor Michelle Adams shared her bedroom in the most recent issue of Lonny, including how to get a gorgeous canopy bed on a budget. See her super glamorous retreat below..

A canopy bed need not cost a fortune.  A little handiness with a power drill, and these industrial pipe rods from West Elm ($69 - $99)  and you've got affordable canopy rods.

White, black, and mirrors = no fail chic.

The leopard and floral is a bit too much pattern for me - I would have gone with white or tan benches.

Love the mirrors, the flower pot, and the beauty accessories.

A great book for all my girly girls out there

The aptly titled "Hers," by Jacqueline deMontravel is a treasure trove of inspiration and ideas to feminize your space, no matter what your style.   The book starts off with the "queen" of all feminine rooms, the bedroom.  The bedroom section was definitely may favorite, and helps you narrow down colors, details, fabrics, and layering.

I love this bedroom, and the balance between masculine and feminine. I'm also crazy about the delicate lace trimmed sheet paired with the chocolate brown coverlet. Perfect.

Like I said before, this book isn't just about glitzy glam rooms.  It doesn't matter what your style, you can still apply the suggested methods.

The bedroom section was my favorite, but the book also covers other rooms in other chapters, like home offices, outside spaces, creating your own personal space, accommodating guests, and accessorizing.

If this book sounds like just the motivation you've been needing for your home, you can buy it online here.

Some of the most beautiful interiors in the Decorology archive (never posted!)

Today's my birthday so I'm thinking of taking the afternoon off and spending it shamelessly perusing around the mall. But I won't leave without sharing a gift with you guys - some of the prettiest images I have in my archive right now...

Gorgeous inspiring images from my favorite blogs

I thought I'd pick up where I left off and continue with installments of "Favorite Images from my Favorite Blogs." I started this feature because I realized that as a blogger, I rarely had the time to peruse the blogs that inspired me to start blogging, or that I'd discovered while blogging. I hope you enjoy and that it ads a little brightness to your holiday weekend!...

(blogs featured in no particular order)

To begin, images from Pink Wallpaper

...no words...
again, no words...

I really like this chair - which I think is from Anthropologie...but I just don't know if I'd have the discipline to keep everything else in the room complementary

Next, a newly discovered blog for me- Loftlife Magazine

Liking the touches of glamour pared down with clean lines in this bedroom

Have you ever tried arranging your books by color like on this shelf?

Last but not least, Deco & Design

All these images are so serene...

Hope you enjoyed these and have a great holiday weekend!

Modern elegance mixed with 1940s glamour

Not too many of us are blessed with the means and circumstances to live among such decadent furnishings, but we can dream! And besides, that's what the glossies are for. So when I was flipping through some of last year's magazines I rediscovered Ralph Lauren Home's 2008 "Mayfair" collection. In fact, I'd posted some other shots from the Mayfair ad campaign in the August 2008 post here. I think it doesn't hurt, especially in this season of giving to others, to give to yourself a little - even if it's just for a moment, in one's imagination, drooling over the keyboard.

oh that bed...that vanity...

I really like the clear to black candlesticks
