Luxury, Vintage Furniture: FUNKYLUXE

I'm always on the lookout for unique home decor / furniture (since the move) that's one of a kind. As much as IKEA or Crate & Barrel. is ideal for all, I prefer to do a little digging to find the perfect piece. And I found FunkyLuxe to be one of my go-to luxury, vintage online furniture stores. Founders Lana and Omar Karim, hand pick each piece to be reinvented through color, textiles and of course their expert craftsmanship. Here's just a few of my favorite's below (also available for the trade).

Moving Sale ....

Hey everyone! We FINALLY decided on an apartment today. It wasn't our first choice - but it felt like it was where we needed to be versus what we really wanted. Weird, but true. Anyhow, I'll be selling some furniture & accessories that are currently in my home - simply because I need to adjust to the new living space. It's about 50 sq foot smaller than our current apartment but has a ton more amenities in the building.

Here's a list of what will have to be SOLD - I'll post more items this week!  If it's a bigger item, unfortunately, I cannot ship it. However, if you're willing to drive from another borough to New York City to pick something up - that's more than ok.

Everything is in GREAT condition - I take care of my things very well, and you are more than welcomed to come see it all for yourself. As for the white french provincial sofa, it has only been used for 9 months - but it's always covered with a large blanket. If you have questions, email me! Thanks!

My spring wishlist!

My apartment is still in cold weather mode, and could really use a little spring pep-up and some brighter color.  Here are a few things I just added to my list.

These pillows would be AMAZING on my couch or my bed...
This really pretty console table is on sale for only $186!  - A great choice if you love nature and organic shapes, but you aren't into full-on rustic decor.

I've had my eye on these tables for awhile - they're chic and I haven't seen them before.  I just don't think I have space for them right now...bummer.

I've always loved the lines of this chair.
What changes, if any, do you do to pep up your home for spring and the warmer months ahead?

PS:  If you like what you see here - it's all on sale at HauteLook.  If you're a member - go to their home section for these sales, if you aren't a member - you can use my link (it's fast and free to sign up).

Design: Room Dividers

Hello all! This is Brooke Jones from Modern Sophisticate talking about room dividers. Interior designers always have a few tricks up their sleeves for typical design dilemmas.  One of my favorite solutions for converting awkward areas into fabulous spaces is the use of a folding floor screen.

Do you have unsightly pipes in a corner?

Put a screen in front of it.  Have an open concept space you need help defining? Use a screen as a room divider. Not only are screens the master of disguise, they are always a great way to add instant drama and visual interest.

Here are three screens paired with pieces for a home office...

an entryway vignette...

and a Master Bedroom...

How would you use a screen in your home?

Sofa: To Sell or Not to Sell...

Hello everyone! We've been busy packing things & selling stuff around here, my head is spinning! Today I came to a STOP & wondered if I should sell the  white provincial sofa I purchased in 2006. Yes, 2006 & it's been wrapped in (plastic) in my garage ever since - have never truly used it.

For those of you who don't remember when I wrote about it on my blog, you can check out that 2006 post here. I begged my guy to pull it out of garage today (with my help) & put it in our living room...I needed to see it in a home setting & not the garage. It looks so cold & lonely down there, not a pretty sight, know what I mean ladies?!? He was sweet enough to help me - it was crazy - but we did it.

Anyways, I'm faced with a dilemma, my guy likes the sofa but doesn't think it's practical to have a white sofa as our 'main' sofa! Perhaps he's right...but I paid for it & have never used it. I feel like I'd be cheating myself.  He says we'll have to be covering it up with throws, like you see in the photo below...and again, maybe he's right. He also told me that he wouldn't feel like he could relax on it without me watching over his shoulder...

I'm so confused, I don't want it to get dirty...should I care that much??  Should I get creative & paint a black pattern or spots on the couch with black fabric paint???  I figured the dots would conceal any potential dirt, basically making it harder to spot it.

So, I could just SELL it as new since I've never used it or haul it to my new place in NYC. PLEASE let me know what you guys think......I'm seriously at a loss.  It's so pretty & comfortable...I want it, he doesn't so much...

This is what it looks like in my living room right now....& what it would probably look like in my new place, all covered up in a fur throw. Do you guys think it would look good with my white daybed in the same space?!?

This picture below was the inspiration for getting the sofa reupholstered in a white fabric...

Furniture wishlist

So I don't have space for most of these beauties, but maybe one day I'll be able to add a few to my collection..

A color statement dresser.  I kid you not my dresser as a kid was extremely similar.  Like most of the furniture in my bedroom I assumed my grandfather had made it.  Being that the dresser was shared among four small children though, the dresser was pretty banged up and covered in stickers...

This porcupine quill-framed mirror.  Need I say more?!?

The bold print chair.  I don't care for the frame being painted blue.  But I'm loving all the bold upholstery I've been seeing.

Buying Frugal Furniture

Buying Frugal Furniture

Buying furniture can take a big bite out of your wallet. Even with careful thought and wise shopping, it is a major expense. Sometimes it is worth paying a little more money to get a piece that will last for years, rather than a very inexpensive item that will fall apart or become hopelessly outdated in a short time. On the other hand, some people pay outrageous sums of money for their furniture. Most of us neither want to do that, or have the financial means to do so.

There are some basic rules you can follow to keep the cost of buying furniture down, while selecting items that will serve you best for years to come. There are also factors to take into consideration so that your furniture stays in good condition, is comfortable for you, and well used.

Here are some guidelines:

- Remember the design element of scale. Some sofas are oversized, and others are small and seem to hug the ground. IKEA is a discount store that sells a lot of very low furniture. If you have a big room, you will want larger pieces. Smaller sized furniture looks better in small rooms and apartments. IKEA manufactures their furniture in Scandinavia, where dwellings are typically smaller than American sized spaces. Another benefit of their furniture is that it is fire resistant. You can only find that at two retailers in the US.

- Another thing to consider when buying sofas is the height of your family members. You will not be comfortable sitting in a sofa when your feet do not reach the ground. On the other hand, if your knees are in your face, the sofa is too small for you. This is why couples should always shop together for furniture.

- Buy the best quality furniture that you can afford, preferable used. You can find bargains in the chipped and dented section of many department stores, as well as in the classifieds. If you have children, your furniture is not going to remain pristine anyway, and a few scratches are nothing to get concerned about if the quality is good.

- Keep your large upholstered pieces in a neutral color and in a classic style. Visit Goodwill to visualize what happens to trendy pieces. Very few people are comfortable with a lime green or burnt orange sofa in their living room. Colors return, but they are in different shades. The hottest bright green now is a kiwi color. I personally like that color, and have a futon cover in that shade. When it becomes hopelessly outdated, I hope to just replace the cover. When your furniture is in a solid color, it is very easy to drape an afghan, quilt, or blanket over it to hide worn spots. You can make it last a lot longer that way.

- When buying wood furniture, as a general rule, the darker the wood, the more formal it is. Again, if you shop at IKEA, you will notice all their furniture is casual, and almost all of it is stained in a light color, like pine or birch. Wood grain with a lot of red in it, like mahogany, is difficult to blend with lighter colors. For the most versatility, buy your wood stained in medium to light shades.

- When you look at the upholstery fabric on your furniture, remember that it is only as strong as its weakest fiber. When I was taking my Interior Design classes in college, we tested the fibers in fabric. We pulled them apart, and ran tests on them for several things, including strength and durability. Fabric that is made from several different kinds of fibers will probably not be as durable as a closely woven fabric made with one material. These are usually fabrics with a very smooth texture and tight weave. Pieces that can be used in several ways, and in different rooms of your home, will serve you for years. Buy real wood when possible, and you have many options to stain and paint over the years as needed.

- Buy furniture you know you will use. Think about the function of each piece. Be sure you are spending money on something you really need.

- Use multi-purpose pieces whenever possible. If you are short on space, placing a television on a bookcase is more practical than placing it on a stand. Use small bookcases for tables, trunks for coffee tables, and bed units with drawers in the frame for children. You can also hide a lot of stuff under fabric-covered tables. You can buy simple cardboard stands, meant to be covered, or make one yourself by cutting a circle out of plywood and putting it on a sturdy base.

- Finally, remember that mixing and matching is now in full fashion. You want your room to look like it has evolved over a period of time. This gives it the character and warmth you do not find in a furniture showroom.

Make good use of furniture that comes to you from all sources. Reupholstering chairs is not hard, and stripping wood and refinishing or painting it is a do-it-yourself project. Careful shopping, including buying interesting used pieces, will give character and personality to your home. It is also fun to be surrounded by items that have a history or story associated with them, rather than a trip to the local furniture store.

Lovely coastal and country French furnishings

While in Colmar, a city in the Alsace region of France, I saw this store, Maisons du Monde, from the street and they had a stack of magazines outside the shop. So I picked one up for some train reading material. They have some nice styling, and the furniture seems decent, so I thought I'd share. Can anyone attest to the quality?

- never seen a couch with such high arms!

They seem to carry furnishings in all different styles.

really like the chair.

This would be a great piece for a fine artist!

What do you think? Kinda has a Pottery Barn look to it.

Tired of the same old?

I wanted to share this really cool furniture store that was brought to my attention a few weeks ago. If you're into a mirrored furniture and brightly colored French traditionals, then you'll love this.
